Cream-Nut, Gourmet Magazine, & Bon Appetit

We were all sad to see Gourmet Magazine cease publication this year. They did a nice piece on Cream Nut Natural Peanut Butter for their web site. Their “sister” publication seems to have taken an interest in us — Cream Nut is one of the items in Bon Appetit’s January giveaway.

Cream-Nut name declared “weird;” peanut butter declared “best.”

The blog “The Gastronomical Jess” has a post titled “The best peanut butter has the worst name.” The blogger, Jess, writes about Cream-Nut:

I cannot decide if the weird name is just sheer hippie oblivion or a genius marketing strategy because I will admit, the reason I picked this up to begin with was because of the weird name.

Although we’ve owned the Cream-Nut brand since the 1920’s (here is a picture from the ‘teens), I don’t know where the name came from. One clue that I’ve found is this post card, dated 1922:

On the left side of the postcard is a sign for “Cream-Nut Bread.” I’ve also seen ads from that era, including one from an old Grand Rapids paper, advertising Cream-Nut Bread made locally. I wonder if the name was licensed (or “borrowed”) from a bread brand?

As long as we taste the best, I’m OK with having the worst name.

George Washington Carver was a remarkable person. I would love to get to Philadelphia to see the exhibit put on at the Academy of Natural Sciences. But I’ll be there in spirit. Their gift shop placed an order for our peanut butter to sell with the show.

Jeff Koeze is posting (slowly, be patient) a series of photos of old packaging of Koeze products from our collection. Here is the first photo of a Cream Nut Peanut Butter tin made by the Bel Car Mo Nut Butter Company, which Albertus Koeze bought in the 1920’s.

Caramel Apples Over ’til Next Year

Every year we use the fresh Michigan apple crop — Jonathan apples, first, then Fuji’s — to make fantasic caramel apples for sale at our two local stores. The last of this year’s apples (slightly below our quality standards) just got moved to the lunch room for our employees to eat up. It is a lot of work to hand make and sell 14,000 apples in 4 weeks, but a lot of fun, too. I’m already looking forward to next year.
